The University of Washington Huskies haven’t won a national college football championship in more over 30 years. If they can beat Texas on New Year’s Day, they will now have another chance.
Why it matters: Although Washington has won two football titles in the past, it may finally earn a national championship this year that isn’t uncomfortably shared with one or more other teams.
What’s happening: On January 1, the No. 2 Huskies will travel to New Orleans to play the University of Texas Longhorns, who are ranked third, in the Sugar Bowl, a semifinal playoff game.
The winner advances to face Alabama or Michigan for the national championship on January 8.
Details: This is UW head coach Kalen DeBoer’s opportunity to demonstrate that the unbeaten Husky squad of this year is comparable to the 1991 Huskies, who finished 12–0 and won the national college football championship under renowned head coach Don James.
There would be even greater significance to a victory this year since there would be no disagreement about which squad is the best.
Rewind: For a number of years, including 1991, surveys that determined the national championship were not always in agreement. As a result, both Washington and Miami still contend for the title from that year.
Washington was ranked first in the USA Today/CNN Coaches Poll of 1991, while Miami was ranked first in the final Associated Press poll of that year.
According to UW Athletics, a comparable scenario occurred in 1960, when UW, Minnesota, and Ole Miss all won the title.
Notably, under the current College Football Playoff format—which started nine years ago and has the best teams competing in an elimination tournament—this is only the Huskies’ second appearance in the playoffs.
In the quarterfinals of their most recent postseason trip, the Huskies fell to Alabama 24–7 in 2016.
