• Researchers have shown that female doctorate students in STEM subjects are less likely than their male counterparts to become first-time innovators throughout their academic training. This tendency is significant since STEM Ph.D. students are a vital source of human capital in the innovation economy. Researching the education of Ph.D. candidates in STEM fields, the MIT Sloan School of Management and Copenhagen Business School discovered that there is a “leaky pipeline” of aspiring female innovators, in part due to gender disparities in faculty advisor matching. “Is there an equal chance for male and female Ph.D. students to become inventors during their training?” stated Mercedes Delgado, a co-author of the paper, research affiliate at MIT, and associate professor of strategy and innovation at Copenhagen Business School. “The short response is no.” Because an inventor who patents while still a student gains a cumulative competitive advantage over time, Fiona Murray, an MIT Sloan professor, associate dean for Innovation and Inclusion, and one of the study’s other co-authors, said the findings have “significant implications” for startups and large corporations looking to increase gender diversity. “Imagine you became a new inventor during your Ph.D. studies,” added Delgado. “We think that can have — and this is a question for our follow-on work — a long-lasting effect, because after graduation you enter an organization and already know how to do commercial science, so you’ll be an even more productive inventor during your career.” According to the report, advisers to doctoral students are essential in guiding and assisting aspiring innovators in filing patents and collaborating on joint inventions. Researchers discovered that 4% of Ph.D. candidates at the top 25 colleges in terms of patent filings went on to become new innovators. But the likelihood of them submitting their first patent as students rose to 23% when they were paired with a faculty advisor who was also a prominent inventor. However, compared to their male counterparts with PhDs, females were 17% less likely to become new innovators and had a 21% lower chance of being paired with a mentor who is a top inventor. According to Murray, study also revealed that advisors “somewhat under-valued” the innovative abilities and contributions of women, and that female Ph.D. students in the same lab as their advisor and in related subjects were less likely to patent than their male counterparts. According to the research, interventions that could boost the number of female new inventors include encouraging more female faculty members to engage in high levels of patenting, which would increase the pool of female top inventor advisors for upcoming doctorate students, and modifying the advisor-advisee matching process so that more women are trained by advisors who are top inventors. “By offering more opportunity and access to further training and experience with the patenting process and other entrepreneurial activities for all Ph.D. students, but especially for women, we will improve innovation throughout our economies at a time when this is especially important for national competitiveness,” Murray stated.
