- A statement on social media caught my eye. I have often shared the reality that “Broken crayons still color” via my testimony. Our state convention will continue to discuss “Embracing brokenness as opportunity for the Gospel.” Deaths, discouragements, and disappointments have happened to all of us. I’ve been broken many times, but I’ve learned to see them as chances for God to rescue, repair, and redeem me. I retain worth and purpose. Like a damaged crayon, I can still color. My wife and I had a stillborn daughter early in our marriage. We were broken yet God sustained us. Two years later, we were pregnant again, and my wife was hospitalized for pre-eclampsia in the fifth month. Doctors said we had to deliver immediately. Our preterm son was transported to the NICU. We were hopeful despite the poor survival odds. Three days later, he died. Another broken moment without answers or explanations. I think others saw our brokenness as a Gospel opportunity. We applied to foster-adopt children after discussing it with my wife. In July 2004, tribe child welfare contacted us about a newborn boy requiring placement and asked if we were interested. We accepted and took the infant boy home that night. We took in the infant boy’s 4-year-old sibling two weeks later and his sisters the same month. This was the first time all the kids lived together. We wanted to adopt the kids, but the birth parents wouldn’t relinquish parental rights. In 2007, I answered the call to ministry at Indian Falls Creek (IFC), and my wife was on track to graduate from Oklahoma Baptist University with an elementary education degree in December. Without explanation, the children were taken from our house after IFC. We were horrified and shattered. I wondered whether I shouldn’t have answered the phone, and my wife wanted to abandon school. One of the girls wrote, “Mom and Dad, I don’t know why this happened and why we had to leave, but thank you for taking us in and caring and most of all for telling us about Jesus!” You’ll be a fantastic teacher, Mom, and I hope you preach worldwide, Dad.” Brokenness is everywhere, and I share my story to inspire you to share yours so others can write their own. Psalm 96:3 states, “Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous works among all the peoples!”
