I welded for 6 years then was lured over to electrical by the “sparkys got it easy” lore. It’s not. Then again my local has a ratty reputation. Some days it’s cool and some days I regret taking the pay cut but I’m in this boat now and have been trying to maneuver myself into becoming a hard to find asset. I myself have been thinking of the pipelines and if you end up there I doubt it’ll be for any union shop. Work and territory is clearly defined in almost every place that is afl/cio affiliated. Meaning if work is slow on the electrical side you don’t just get to jump over to being a welder for a few weeks. The only welding that I’ve seen done by electricians is strut to steel for rigid. And that was done by a jdub/hobby welder without any certs for welding. It wasnt xray quality and nobody cared becuase it served its purpose. Personally I’m now leaning towards a welding machine repair side business, being that a welder is basically a transformer and the arc it produces is just a controlled short circuit. But even with this knowledge, my aspirations, from my light research, arent as lucrative as I first imagined. Above all else, trouble shooting the problem is complicated and time consuming to say the least. I guess the silver lining to all this is that I have seen calls (not in my local) for jdub electrician/welders but they’re few and far between with an almost certainty for traveling to another part of the country as a book 2 in a local that might not pay as well as the home local. If I were you I’d get into electrical asap then decide after that if it’s worth the time devoting yourself to another trade. Welders Vote For Trump Flag
