With the name Australian Shepherd, they are not native to Australia, but were born and developed in America to do the job of a herding dog on the plains. It got its name from one of their historical ancestors. The original ancestors of this breed were the Spanish dogs that, along with the Basque sheepdogs, were exported to the US and Australia with Mexican sheep in the early days of arriving in these two countries. They can be bred with Shepherd Collies. Today, they are officially recognized. Their strengths include being guard dogs, police dogs, mine detectors, search and rescue dogs, shepherds, sentinels, scavengers, dexterity tests, obedience tests and tricks demonstrations.
