• The picture is iconic: Olympic podium athletes raise their fists. The 1968 Summer Olympics photo of Tommie Smith and John Carlos after the 200 meter race in Mexico City sparked a controversy over their raised-fist salute, a symbol of Black power and the human rights movement. Another guy in the shot is white Australian runner Peter Norman, a silver medalist. Norman supported Smith and Carlos without raising his fist. His display of unity terminated Norman’s career, but the three players’ actions that day were only one of many sporting demonstrations. Smith and Carlos, who won gold and bronze, committed to expose US societal concerns after their medal triumphs. Racial tensions peaked, and the Civil Rights movement gave way to Black Power. African-Americans like Smith and Carlos were dissatisfied by the Civil Rights movement’s passivity. They promoted racial pride, Black nationalism, and dramatic action over incremental change through aggressive protests. Protests against the Vietnam War were growing months after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s killing. Smith and Carlos organized the Olympic Project for Human Rights, reflecting their Black pride and social conscience, before the Olympics. The organization used the Olympics to advocate for Black athletes and people worldwide. The organization demanded more Black instructors and revocation of Olympic invites to Rhodesia and South Africa, which practiced apartheid. The group initially recommended boycotting the Olympics, but Smith and Carlos chose to compete in hopes of using their success to inspire change. Just 10 days before the Summer Games, an unarmed group of protestors met in Mexico City’s Three Cultures Square to decide the next step of the burgeoning Mexican student movement. The Mexican government used bulldozers to disperse the thousands, and military shot into the throng, killing four to 3,000 students. These events and the suffering of underprivileged people worldwide struck Carlos and Smith greatly. “It was a cry for freedom and for human rights,” Smith told Smithsonian magazine in 2008. Because we couldn’t be heard, we had to be seen.” As a less direct protester, the third man on the platform participated. Norman was a 1942 Melbourne working-class youngster before earning silver. His family was devoted Salvation Army members, an evangelical group affiliated with the American charity. This faith included the idea that men were equal. Norman was a fast runner who began to sprint on spikes his butcher father borrowed due to poverty. Junior running star won his first major victory in Victoria in 1960. After that, he was a significant Australian track and field competitor. He was a strong sprinter who excelled at finishing, unlike several short-course racers.
