ABOUT THE PRODUCT: Awake Dream Theater Album Cover Shirt, Sweatshirt, Hoodie

Awake is my favorite Dream Theater album. That being said, I can totally understand why some people may feel underwhelmed by it. There are many possible reasons for not enjoying Awake (as for any other album), but I have a theory about it: Awake is one of the most heterogeneous records the band has ever written. Whenever I listen to it, I don’t feel any natural flow between the tracks as I do with other albums like Train of Thought, Scenes from a Memory or even Images & Words – almost every track transition seems truncated. Moreover, the album has a unique sound, with a more noticeable focus on the textures (harmony) and it has a singular dark and moody vibe, which can turn some people off. The sound isn’t easily “digestible” like I&W and Scenes, for instance, so you may wait until some tracks “click” to you. This exact process happened with me when I found DT: my first contact was with I&W and it was my favorite album for quite some time. I was also into tracks from Train of Thought and Scenes from a Memory, but nothing from Awake interested me that much besides Erotomania. However, the more I played it, the more I could understand the genius of some compositions and, at that point, the album sky-rocketed in my personal ranking, jumping to the first position – and it is still there even after some years.

6:00 was also forgettable to me in the first time – then I notice how brilliant its jazzy influences are, how amazing Kevin Moore’s solo is, and how it’s, structuraly, a quite innovative song compared to their typical sound. I also thought that Innocence Faded was a filler – it was the song that took the most time for me to like it. But then I noticed how gifted James’s performance is, and how interesting the instrumental section in the last 2 minutes is. The Silent Man was for me, just like you, a boring song. However, I understood that it was important to take a break in the middle of the album after so much instrumental (and vocal) madness in the first 35 minutes. Moreover, I learned to appreciate the beauty in the simplicity of this song, and also of its clever lyrics (one of Petrucci’s best in my opinion). I’m not saying that you will for sure enjoy the album in the future – you may wait for some months, listen to it more times, and still find some songs there boring. What I’m saying is that it’s normal not to feel impressed by Awake in the first contacts with the album – for me, it took almost one year to fully appreciate it. Just take your time and maybe you can relate to the album in the future 😉
