Conveys deep appreciation
BYU men’s basketball coach Mark Pope thanked BYU and its fans in a heartfelt message on Thursday afternoon. Pope’s message came a day after he was announced as the new head coach at Utah Valley University.
“I want to thank BYU for the incredible opportunity to serve as the head coach of the men’s basketball team for the past five years,” Pope said in his message. “It has been an honor and a privilege to coach these young men and represent this great university.”
Pope went on to thank BYU’s fans, administration, and student body for their support. He also thanked his players, past and present, for their hard work and dedication.
“I am incredibly grateful for the time I spent at BYU,” Pope said. “I will always cherish the memories I made here.”
Pope was hired as BYU’s head coach in 2019. He led the Cougars to a 116-69 record during his five seasons at the helm. He also guided BYU to two NCAA Tournament appearances, in 2021 and 2022.
Pope’s departure from BYU was somewhat unexpected. He had been rumored to be interested in other head coaching jobs, but it was not widely believed that he would leave BYU.
However, Pope ultimately decided to take the job at UVU. UVU is a Division II school that is located in Orem, Utah. It is a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Pope’s decision to leave BYU was met with mixed reactions from BYU fans. Some fans were disappointed to see him go, while others wished him well in his new endeavor.
Only time will tell what the future holds for Pope and UVU. However, there is no doubt that he is a talented coach who has a proven track record of success.
